Diario di Scuola

di Aleksandra Lovrenčić Došen

Allora…this happens to be my favourite Italian word as I heard it so many times while observing classes in April 2025, as part of my Erasmus+ job shadowing mobility. So / Allora…our countries, Italy and Croatia, aren't that far away from each other, but, admittedly, we actually know very little about each other's education system and the way things at school work in general. The very first surprise was that the school operates in two locations, not exactly neighbouring ones, but half-hour car drive apart. And the two being so different – the one in Vobarno is vibrant, in industrial surroundings, and the one in Idro resting peacefully among the hills, with a breathtaking view of the lake. Enough poetry…let's focus on the experience itself! I absolutely loved being part of your school daily routine. Loved the way you looked at me whenever I joined a new class…like, who, on Earth? Loved the way you relaxed fairly quickly, asked me questions… Apart from English classes, I also attended some Italian and History ones. Believe it or not, I managed to understand what was being done, regardless of me not speaking Italian. What I liked best was the way you addressed your teachers saying that cute 'profe' and how you actually participated in most classes. It showed that you were genuinely interested in the topics which weren't part of your professional subjects, and a wide range of interest is something to be appreciated, especially with the young. Loved the green river of Chiese, the wondrous lake of Idro…but most of all, loved the smiles on your faces, the tireless work of your teachers to make me feel welcome, and the fact that I lived with you and your school for one week. Till we meet again…
